Under Your Spell

Under Your Spell

Personnel: Chibi (vocals); Michael Rainbow, Michael Falcore (guitar); Owen Mackinder (keyboards); Rhim (drums).
Audio Mixers: Michael Rainbow; Dave Ogilvie; Michael Falcore.
Recording information: Desolation Studios, Toronto, Canada; Dire Studios, Toronto, Canada; The Altar Studios, Toronto, Canada.
Under Your Spell is the seventh proper studio full-length from Canadian goth pop band the Birthday Massacre. As with their previous album, 2014's Superstition, Under Your Spell was funded by the group's dedicated fan base -- the band met its fundraising goal in a single day. Musically, the Massacre stick to their violet-hued strengths here. The guitars are loud, distorted, and crunchy, verging on industrial metal, and the beats are occasionally informed by post-Purity Ring dark electropop, but without seeming like the band is trying too hard to chase trends. Their songs continue to strike a balance between sweetness, sadness, and darkness, with a semi-dramatic flair, but refraining from going too over the top. Songs such as "Endless" are perfect for goth club night, and several others would be at home on alt-rock radio. Metropolis Records released the album in June of 2017, and it charted in the Billboard 200. ~ Paul Simpson
