Sitting on Top of the World [Snapper]
Liner Note Author: Michael Hendon.
In the 1920s and `30s, the Mississippi Sheiks became a phenomenon in the South with their unique mix of blues, folk, and string-band sounds. Many decades later, people like Bob Dylan would record their songs, but the SITTING ON TOP OF THE WORLD collection reaches back to their prime late-'20s/early-'30s period, presenting some of the pioneering group's finest tracks in all their fiddle-sawing, guitar-picking glory. While they were never exactly a blues act per se, the Sheiks had a lot to do with the way blues would sound over the next couple of decades, and many songs that later became blues staples were originated by them. SITTING ON TOP OF THE WORLD is an effective entry point into their influential work.
