Kevin Sharp is nothing short of a powerhouse, and he proves it with LOVE IS. A muscular vocal style is Sharp's signature and he flexes it at every opportunity throughout the 11 pop-flavored tracks. With just as much Boz Scaggs as Vince Gill, Sharp's style draws from a wide variety of influences in both the country and Top 40 camps. Atypical sounds abound; a scratchy guitar here, an R&B flavored rhythm track there, to signal that Sharp is an artist that will stand out in the crowd.
From one cut to the next, the listener can expect the unexpected. Standard country rockers are ever-present ("Kiss The Girl," "She Just Has To Be Mine"), but so are some standout songs that defy exact categorization. The delicate "If She Only Knew" has as much soul as any R&B ballad. A strong folk-rock influence is reflected in the message of "Love Is All That Really Matters." Finally, if "My Love Is" doesn't make you remember the days of Kenny Loggins' reign as a Top 40 monarch, then you just aren't listening hard enough.
